Support SDPB with a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA

Smarter Giving. Greater Impact.

Qualified charitable distributions (QCDs) allow individuals aged 70 ½ or older to make tax-free donations directly from their individual retirement accounts (IRAs) to charities like Friends of SDPB. Because the gift goes directly to the charity without passing through your hands, the dollar amount of the gift may be excluded from your taxable income.

Make the most of this tax-advantaged charitable giving strategy and ensure that all South Dakotans have free access to trusted, fact-based journalism, local storytelling, and inspiring educational programs for generations to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I direct a QCD to Friends of SDPB?

What are the advantages of QCDs?

While we are not financial or tax advisors, this strategy offers several benefits, including:

  • Reduces taxable income: Since QCDs go directly to the charity, they are excluded from your taxable income.
  • Fulfills RMD requirements: QCDs count towards the year’s required minimum distributions (RMDs) for individuals aged 73 or older, potentially reducing taxable income and future RMDs.
  • Preservation of cash: By donating with a QCD instead of cash, you preserve your liquid assets for other needs or investments.
  • Simplifies giving: QCDs are transferred directly from your IRA to the charity, allowing you to support the causes you care most about conveniently.
Is there an annual limit for QCDs?

Yes, for 2025, the limit is $108,000 per person. For 2026, the limit is $111,000 per person.

Can I request a QCD and then donate the cash to charity?

The direct transfer is crucial. If the funds are distributed to the IRA owner first, they will be subject to regular income tax.

What’s the difference between a QCD and an RMD?

The short answer is – they’re related, but there is a big difference. Everyone must start taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from their qualified retirement plans – including IRAs – when they reach the age of 73. RMDs are taxable income.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), by contrast, is a distribution that is transferred directly from an IRA to a qualified charity. QCDs can count towards your RMD for that year. And because the QCD goes directly to charity, you are not taxed on the distribution.

Can I make a QCD even if I’m not yet required to take RMDs?

Yes, individuals aged 70 ½ or older are eligible to take advantage of this charitable giving strategy.

Can I direct a QCD to my donor-advised fund?

No, QCDs can be made only to certain qualified charitable organizations, as defined in the tax code. Currently, QCDs cannot be made to donor-advised funds (DAFs) or private foundations, even though these are categorized as charities. You should always check before making a QCD gift to ensure the organization is qualified to accept them.

Can I use a QCD to receive a thank you gift?

No, you cannot receive any goods or services in return for your QCD because of IRS regulations.
